| What Is Feng Shui?
There is no simple answer. Something called feng shui is peddled by numerous book authors who tend to contradict each other; with books or charts telling you what color to use in your relationship corner; or found online. Beware the sites that sell bamboo flutes, imitation Chinese coins, or other supposedly authentic feng shui cures. Rather than representing classical feng shui, most of the examples above are designed to separate you from your money.
Classical feng shui is based on the same principles as Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and the martial arts. All are elegant systems, refined over centuries of study and observation. They are systematic and mathematically organized. This is illustrated by the sixty four hexagrams of the The I Ching, an ancient book that considers the laws of nature and the laws of humankind to be the same. All is based on the ever-changing nature of yin and yang, the unifying principle in Chinese metaphysics.
Feng shui focuses on how buildings and man-made structures affect people using five element theory. An acupuncturist uses the same theory, but applies it to your body and organs rather than to your house or office. Five element theory is as powerful in balancing your living or working space as it is in balancing your body when feng shui is practiced in the classical manner.
What Feng Shui Is NOT
Feng shui is not a religion. Anyone of any faith can use this tool to live in better harmony with nature. Put simply, it is like using a thermometer to read temperature. It is a study of natural influences over centuries that can be used by you right now.
Classical feng shui is not inherently an intuitive practice. It is a methodology. A legitimate feng shui practitioner will not arrive with crystals, do rituals of any sort, or claim intuitive knowledge of energies at work in your home. The people who practice these things might be on to something, but it is not classical feng shui.
